I was talking to a business acquaintance who was in his 50s and during the conversation, he was asking me, so how old are you? You look like you are 32!
Of course, that made my day because I’m a few years older than that!
My little grey hairs are starting to peek out from my declining stock of black hair as I’m pushing two years shy of 40.
Older and Wiser in Financial Freedom
We all want the benefits of being older and wiser without the accompanying disadvantages of aging. Just take a look at the number of healthcare products, supplements and aids that claim to make you more “youthful” that you will feel “young” again and healthy! If only we could achieve financial wisdom without going through the heartbreaking experiences of losing a bit of our monies to the stock market, con-man or high-yield investment programmes.
Let me share with you a little secret. You can’t grow wiser without going through experiences. Life is a journey about the breadth and depth of experiences you encounter. It is about being present in each moment that life throws at you both the bouquets and brickbats that make and break your day. You can however, learn a bit from others and cut down and what you have to go through to acquire wisdom towards being financially free.
Being Wiser Without Aging
The only way you can become a little bit wiser without going through all the experiences of learning from mistakes is to learn from others’ mistakes. The public libraries are a great source of wisdom of the ages –past and present. Most of the personal finance mistakes people make are documented vividly through the many excellent books you can find for the price library membership.
George S Clason’s “The Richest Man in Babylon” teaches fundamental personal finance principles in a parable format. In it, the stories shared by the characters bring to life modern financial principles even when it is set in historical context of Babylon.
It shows how the enduring principles of financial freedom have not changed through the ages. Living within your means, saving and investing as well as protecting and growing your means are age-old fundamentals that will see you through towards financial freedom.
Human greed and fear, the twice terrors that strike at the heart of every investor who is a human being is really what we have to be constantly on our guard as we travel on this journey towards financial freedom.
Life is about experiental learning – one day at a time
Your own quest towards financial freedom really is an never ending experiental learning exercise. Everyday when you wake up, go to school/work/business, you are in fact participating in the learning in the school of life. Yes, there’s the formal education of schools but the school of life operates on the universal laws. In the school of life, the path towards financial freedom is as varied as there are hues of dusk and dawn.
Everyone has the potential of being financially free through their own unique way. While the principles of living within your means, saving and investing will see you through, how you put these principles into practice is entirely up to you. Your rules, your approach, your style!
What will you begin to learn next in this school of life?
How do you intend to make use of each day that you trade time for wisdom and maturity towards financial freedom?

Nice post.. reminds me that each day should be a learning experience of some sort, even if small… and that we can put ourselves in situations where we will deliberately learn more. I need to work on better learning from others’ mistakes, too – I’m very interested in getting ahead without making unnecessary mistakes if I can help it! Steve Pavlina’s book has a wonderful analysis of this process of deliberately invoking learning experiences, too – it’s the only way to grow.

Hi MoneyEnergy
Learning from mistakes has been the traditional route towards growing wiser. By tapping on the mistakes of others, we learn in a more efficient and effective manner.
