I just attended some corporate training on communication skills and learnt about the false dichotomy known as “Sucker’s Choice”.
What is Sucker’s Choice?
The concept of sucker’s choice is straightforward. In times when we are under pressure and stress, we are subject to physiological changes in our body (i.e. the flight or fight reflex) that raises our blood pressure and reduces flow of blood to the brain to our limbs to enable us to react to a perceived threat. This makes us think poorly because our brain is starved of oxygen from the reduced blood flow.
As a result, we tend to only think superficially that there are only one or two choices to solve the threat. The extreme example of sucker’s choice is how flight crew of a aircraft that crashed because the pilot was so distracted by a faulty error light that he didn’t realise the plane was running out of fuel and subsequently crashed. When the surviving crew members were asked why they didn’t tell the pilot about the fuel situation, they said that they didn’t want to disrespect the pilot by questioning his competence and telling him about the fuel situation.
This is the classic sucker’s choice, i.e. the crew member thought he couldn’t tell the pilot as it was a form of disrespect and so chose to endure silence and consequently put at risk the entire plane and its crew and passengers.
We later learnt in the class to take a step back and think of ways to overcome sucker’s choice. In the airplane example, the crew should have thought of a way to highlight the pilot’s attention to the fuel situation diplomatically without embarrassing him.
There are Alternatives in Financial Freedom
I realise in my journey towards financial freedom, I’ve also been lured into the sucker’s choice thinking that life is about achieving financial freedom only if my passive income exceeds my lifestyle expenses.
I’ve learnt to take a broader understanding of financial freedom, in seeing that while achieving a passive income level that is more than my living expenses is the goal, I can continue to be happy and be financially independent even whilst relying on my earned income to get me to my ideal.
In fact, the most valuable lesson I’ve learnt in this journey towards financial freedom is knowing that mentally I have achieved the correct mindset in living my life that is conducive for being financially free. Now is to enjoy the experiences from my profession, family and personal domains to enrich each moment I have here on this world.
Shades of the Financial Freedom Rainbow
Financial freedom is not a dichotomy as I discussed in my previous post. It is a continuum, a rainbow of colours that comes in different shades and hues. We go through life exploring the various ways and means how we bring ourselves closer to the goal.
In the process, we learn more about ourselves.
Do you think you are faced with possible sucker’s choices in your own quest towards financial freedom?
Be well and prosper.

From your recent posts, it seems that you have been slowly doubting your own ability to build up your sources of passive income to achieve financial freedom and hence there is a need to have a mindset change. May be this is a good move for you. Wish you well and prosper.

I still don’t quite get what is meant by sucker’s choice. Is it tunnel vision – thinking that you have only 1-2 choices whereas if you expanded your vision, you can see more choices?
If that’s the case, I think it can be both good and bad. Since you’ve mentioned the bad, let me give a balanced view of the good side of tunnel vision.
It helps you focus and really focus on your goals. Once you burned all your bridges and you realised that the only way to go is forward, you’ll move on with a different mindset altogether.
Not such a bad idea, isn’t it?

Dear createwealth8888
Life is unpredictable. My own experience shows that you must plan, i.e. focus on my dream of achieving financial freedom, and yet I need to be open enough to deviate from the plan to fit in curve balls thrown in life e.g. my changing of residence involving putting a large part of my investible capital into home equity.
This effectively delays my financial freedom target by a number of years.
But I found myself okay with that because there are other goals that are better met with my change in residence.
Be well and prosper.

Dear LP
Sucker’s Choice is tunnel vision to some extent but it is our mind giving us only choices (a) or (b) under stressful conditions. If we were calm and collected, we would probably generate better choices (c) or (d) that may be able to satisfy (a) and (b).
I recall from one book I read that the quality of our decisions depends a lot of the quality of the choices of solutions that are at our disposal.
Thus, it’s all right to be focussed but the key question we need to ask ourselves is that are these the best choices given the conditions or did we overlook something?
Recently, I’ve been ploughing through many books on working in teams, leadership and project management and thus am exploring how to make better decisions and get work done more effectively through management and leadership.
Be well and prosper.

PG,
Ah, I see, PG. Thanks for sharing with us
I’m an idiot at these kind of topics so it’s good to hear more from you
Interesting..

Hey,
Very interesting post. I don’t think I’d ever heard the term Sucker’s choice before. Your explanation of the cause of the crash reminded me of the Leslie Nielson movie Aiplane. It’s funny as I learn and teach more about tips on budgeting I find that finances are as much about our thought patterns and beliefs as they are about numbers.
Thanks again, and if you ever want to write a guest post, let me know.
Cheers,
