After seeing your blog, I think Singapore is really a 1st world country like the western ones. They also need to retire in other 3rd world countries. Quite sad though, considering you have serve NS and when you are old you cannot even stay in your own country.

Dear Redsunz

I don't mind. I'm 39 now. Will be 40 soon and coming to the big FOUR ZERO makes me more philosophical about life. :-)

Interesting to see that you are moving over to Pattaya especially with a young child.

I heard that the Singaporean community is growing there and nh1870 himself is already there.

I wish you all the best in your move there.

Chok dee maak, sa wat di khrap.

Hi Panzer, nh1870

Don't mind me asking how old are you both? I'm actually also planning to shift over to thailand next year. Going to Pattaya next week to look for house and school for my 4yrs old girl. nl1870, where you currently staying now? Any recommendation on any cheap and good new townhouse development? Nevertheless Its take alot of courage to actually give up life here in singapore to move over to thailand. Most likely i will start a small food business there.

If you two don't mind can add me in facebook. We can chit-chat there.

Dear nh1870

Thanks for your insightful comment.

The retirement visa sounds achievable as it's about $34,000 SGD to get one. Though the 50 year old requirement is also realistic :-)

BTW, have you learnt to speak Thai by now?

Khun puut pa sar Thai, dai-mai? :-)

Great to hear that you are having a less stressful life in Pattaya and be well and prosper!

However... Moving to Pattaya is the best choice I made in my life. Life is less stressful. The Thai people, majority who are Buddhist are generally very fun and kind.

You do not need a motorcycle license to ride a bike. It is good to have one in case if you get into an accident. I have been riding a bike for years without a license. For motorcar, yes, you will need a driving license. You can easily obtain a Thai driving license if you have a International Driving Permit (IDP), provide you are in Thailand on Non-Immigration Visa, which is the type of Visa I listed in my previous post.

The only thing I miss about Singapore is the hawker food.

Hi,

I am a Singaporean living permanently in Pattaya. If you want to retire in Thailand, your income generated from the renting out of your Singapore property might not be enough if you are going to stay in Bangkok.

Thai laws are very strict regarding foreigners staying permanently in Thailand, especially those working here. This is to protect the livihood of Thai citizen. However, in Pattya, the number of foreigners almost outnumber the Thais, especially during the high season.

There are many ways to reside permanently in Thailand. Almost all will cost money.

1. Work Permit - A Thai company hires you to work in Thailand
2. Work Permit - Set up a company with a share not more than 50%. The other 50% and more will have to be a Thai citizen. Usually 49% Foreigner and 51% Thai.
3. Retirement Visa - Above 50 and need to have THB 800,000 in bank account
4. Marriage Visa - You marry a Thai citizen
5. ED-Visa - You can obtain student VISA for up to 10 years.

Hope these helps.

Hi,
I happened to stumble to your blog page when I'm writing a blog about internet marketing job or internet marketing entrepreneur for Thai people. I'm an American-Thai who's lived in the states since my early 20's (1969). I read through your whole story and admire your courage and determination to retire in Thailand. I also used to be a Thai language teacher after I graduated from high school. It was fun teaching language to foreigners at that time. Also thinking about retirement fund, now I'm starting an internet marketing entrepreneur and try to help other Thais to get more exposed to this opportunity for a better life for the love of my origin country. I wish you the best of luck and success on your plan. Take care!
PS. If you have any questions or need help of some kind about Thailand, pls feel free to drop me a note.

Hi bummy

Thanks for your comment. I've also heard from my colleagues who met Singaporean retirees who are happily settled in Thailand as well so a number of Singaporeans are already doing it. :-)

I am taking one step at a time. Language is the first step and can be a lifelong pursuit. Visiting parts of Thailand is the second part to find out more as a tourist and as a potential retiree. Must do homework first and I give myself the next 10 years to do my homework :-)
